Due to the fact that President Obama has just held a very important sppech in front of the NAAC (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and  that the great man Neson Mandela celebrated his 91st birthday yesterday,  I would like to write something about South Africa.

Here below is the legendary foto taken by Nzima in 1976, showing the dying Hector Pieterson in the arms of Makhubo and Antoinette, Hector’s sister running alongside. The boy was killed by one of the policeman shooting at the children.

In 1976 there was a demonstration going on, which at the beginning was peaceful, against the introduction of Africaans ( a descendent of Dutch) in the schools, because most of the pupils didn’t know that language.

Besides the hero Nelson Mandela there is, for example, Steve Biko,

who fought without using violence, in the sense of Gandhi, against the Apartheid system. He died i police custody on September 12, 1977 after suffering brain lesion caused by the application of force on the head.

Auf Deutsch:

Zur Gefängnsinsel “Robben Island”, wo Neslon Mandela oder Steve Biko inhaftiert waren. Auf meiner Reise durch Südafrika wurde mir gesagt, dass man Nelson Mandela damals die Flucht aus jenem Gefängnis empfohlen hatte, ihn aber damit nur in eine tödliche Falle locken wollte.

Soweto, the township south west of Johannesburg was one of the places where the black people were accomodated, especially after 1886 when gold was found and the Africans had to work in the mines. After the introduction of apartheid in 1948 removals from the cities became more and more important.

We crossed  Soweto by car and in part it was heartbreaking to see the poverty but, of course, we were also shown many areas where life seems to be of very high level. We saw, for example, the luxurious villa of Winnie Mandela, Mandela’s ex-wife.
