South Africa
In two languages / In zwei Sprachen
Due to the fact that President Obama has just held a very important sppech in front of the NAAC (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and that the great man Neson Mandela celebrated his 91st birthday yesterday, I would like to write something about South Africa.
LET’S BYGONES BE BYGONE
Fill the following words into the gaps:

Here below is the legendary foto taken by Nzima in 1976, showing the dying Hector Pieterson in the arms of Makhubo and Antoinette, Hector’s sister running alongside. The boy was killed by one of the policeman shooting at the children.

In 1976 there was a demonstration going on, which at the beginning was peaceful, against the introduction of Africaans ( a descendent of Dutch) in the schools, because most of the pupils didn’t know that language.
Besides the hero Nelson Mandela there is, for example, Steve Biko,
who fought without using violence, in the sense of Gandhi, against the Apartheid system. He died i police custody on September 12, 1977 after suffering brain lesion caused by the application of force on the head.
( The video “A story of hope and triumph” about Steve is also for beginners.)

And now please enjoy South Africa and its nature despite the fact that you are not there:
In the Kruger and Hluhluwe National Parks. In den Nationalparks.
Describe the pictures:

Beschreibt die Fotos:
This is in Soweto, hometown of the black people of Johannesburg:
Fotos:Franz Ramsauer
Describe the people on these fotos/ Beschreibt die Leute auf diesen Bildern:
(Put the verbs in the past into the present and vice-versa.)
Soweto, the township south west of Johannesburg was one of the places where the black people were accomodated, especially after 1886 when gold was found and the Africans had to work in the mines. After the introduction of apartheid in 1948 removals from the cities became more and more important.
We crossed Soweto by car and in part it was heartbreaking to see the poverty but, of course, we were also shown many areas where life seems to be of very high level. We saw, for example, the luxurious villa of Winnie Mandela, Mandela’s ex-wife.

Make some sentences to these fotos . (The lady belongs to the Ndeble tribe.)
Macht einige Sätze zu diesen Fotos. (Wie fühlen sich die Kinder?)
There is so much to say about South Africa, maybe another Time more?
