JAPAN/Earthquake/Tsunami

Für Deutsch siehe weiter unten.

Due to this terrible earthquake in the north-east of Japan, 8’000 time as strong as the one that devastated Christchurch, New Zealand and the tsunami which just swept

away buildings, cars, ships and so many people and because of the fears about the consequences of the explosion at the Fukushima power plant,

I decided to show you the link to the BBC coverage of the distaster

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12709598

so that we can speak about it in class.

This is a link to a video concerning  technical explanations about what is happening in the reactors http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12739184

I also refer to the articles about the earthquake in Christchurch/Nea Zealand and about the power plant in Gösgen/Switzerland.

The  report from the 11th April 2011 by bbc.co.uk is about the huge amounts of debris which are floating towards the west coast of the United States. Specialists

say that the rubbish could destroy engines or pierce the body of a boat. They are afraid that this huge mass of bobbing wreckage =resti/Trümmer of furniture =mobili/Möbel,

wood=legno/Holz, tyres =pneumatici/Autoreifen and other garbage=rifiuti/Abfall is sweeping eastwards. Read more clicking on the following link:

could reach Hawai in two years and the east coast in one year.

CHRISTCHURCH

I know that you’ve all heard about the terrible earthquake by which Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island New Zealand, was struck (explanations of how to use this

word see below) on 22 February  2011 and that due to this catastrophe many people died and  many buildings were destroyed. Some parts of the city still seem to be without

drinking water or electricity.

Christchurch is a very nice city and has approximately 350’000 inhabitants. There are beautiful parks and excellent schools and the cosy tramway usually takes you on a

sightseeing tour around the city.

Unfortunately, the very famous ChristChurch Cathedral, which was built in the 19th century and  finished in 1904 has been very badly damaged. Its spire which reached 63 metres

above Cathedral Square  is in ruins and left only the lower tower standing.  The many buildings nearby are also ruined. The cathedral is in the centre of the city and is surrounded by

Cathedral Square. The tower had offered a good view over the centre. The cathedral also had a very impressive organ. I only hope that it still exists.

Last but not least the cathedral used to be the best known and most visited building in New Zealand!

What’s the name of the capital city of New Zealand?

I’m sorry for all this and  wish youl  good luck!
