very interesting interview by the NZZ journalist Marco Metzler in which Prof. Stuart L Hart from the Corell University answers questions about how it should

be possible  in the future to help poor countries/people at the bottom of the pyramid protocol  and at the same time earn money.

Here below I’m going to summarize the interview.

Prof Hart says that large companies can actually focus business attentions on 1/3 of  the humanity that has been ignored in the past. According to  (gemäss/secondo)him it can

be seen as a business opportunity to engage in local people, slums shanty towns or rural villages in the developing world.  Enterprises that improve peoples’ lives generate

livelihood ( der Lebensunterhalt/sostentamento)for them and produce growth (das Wachstum/crescità) and opportunities for the companies themselves.

How has this to be done?

For the professor it is clear that large corporations play a role in serving the poor. It can’t just be done through the development of products by people in Europe or America and then

go to those poor countries and market them. This procedure does not work for a variety of reasons:

a) The typical product developer or marketer does not understand much about the local context.

b) To succeed it is required that people from the company develop partnerships on the grounds with NGOS and local players.

c) People from these companies have to live on the ground for a certain period of time to get immersed and become able to develop partnership with local people and co-

generate and co-create the business concept with those in the communities because they have a big influence over what  product  get developed and how that product is

embedded in a larger business model  that really has value in the community and from their point of view.

MUTUAL VALUE HAS TO BE CREATED!

d)  Multinational companies have  to face these new challenges and develop new skills.(Fähigkeiten/capacità)

e)  Companies have to create entirely new markets that did not exist in the past. This takes new efforts. It is not enough to do  market research, figure out the market

work, set  prices and  start selling the product, Companies have to be engaged.

f) They have to develop a native capability of how to get embedded in the local community.

At the moment there are no big success stories with this approach! (das Vorgehen/procedere) There are, however,many initiatives. To be able to reach the poor people and have the

price right is necessary but it is not sufficient.

Kunstdenkmäler/Sights/monumenti

Deses Jahr möchte ich euch einige wichtige Kunstdenkmäler aus verschiedenen Ländern mittels meiner Fotos, Beschreibungen , Fragen oder Quiz, sei es auf Deutsch wie auf Englisch

vorstellen. Es soll sozusagen eine interdisiplinäre Arbeit werden, die ich mit der Zeit auch erweitern will, sofern ich Zeit finde und jemand interessiert ist. In der Klasse könnten

die Lernenden darüber sprechen, warum sie lieber an den einen Ort, anstatt an einen anderen gehen würden. Versucht auch selbst mehr herauszufinden über die verschiedenen

Kunstedenkmäler. Am Ende dieses Artikels gibt es ein kleines QUIZ auf Deutsch zu den verschiedenen Sehenswürdigkeiten.

Quest’anno vorrei presentarvi alcuni monumenti culturali  importani che ho visto in diversi paesi, tramite foto, testi, domande o anche quiz. Vorrei farvi fare un piccolo lavoro

interdisciplinare sia in tedesco che inglese. Spero di potervi motivare di andare a visitare qualcuno o qualche paese straniero . BROWNIES IM ADVENT

Hat jemand Lust  in der Adventszeit  diese aussergewöhnlichen Brownies zu backen, anstatt nur Weihnachtseinkäufe Einkäufe zu tätigen ?

C`è qualcuno che durante il periodo d’Advento  ha voglia di provare questa ottima ricetta dei brownies invece di fare solo provviste?

Is there anybody who  during the Advent Season would like to try this very special BROWNIES’ recipe instead of just doing Christmas shopping?

GROSSMUTTERS BROWNIES/I BROWNIES DELLA NONNA OR MY GRANDMA’S BROWNIES

Zutaten/Ingredienti/Ingredients:

200 gr. Butter /200 grammi di burro /200 g butter

135 gr. schwarze, bittere Schokolade /cioccolato scuro e amaro/dark, bitter chocolate

4       Eier /uova/eggs

320 gr. brauner Zucker /zucchero greggio/brown sugar

125 gr. Mehl /farina/flour

1   Prise Salz/ presa di sale /a pinch of salt

100 gr. Baumnüsse nicht fein gehackt/noci tagliate, man non troppo fini choppedwalnutsbuts


Wenn ihr die Zutaten verdoppelt, kann man ein Backblech genau füllen.

Se raddoppiate la quantità  si possono riempire una lamiera piena

If you double the quantity you can exactly fill a whole backing-try.

Das Vorgehen / il procedere /the procedure:

1-    Die Schokolade im Wasserbad schmelzen lassen und zur Seite stellen.

-     Far fondere il cioccolato – a bagnomaria- e mettere da parte.

-     Melt the chocolate in a bain-marie.

2.   Nun die Butter schmelzen lassen und dann die anderen Zutaten zugeben.

-    Adesso far fondere il burro ed aggiungere allo stesso gli altri ingredienti,

     uno   dopo l’altro.

–    Now melt the butter and add one after the other all the other ingredients.

3.  Jetzt die Masse auf ein Backblech geben, nachdem man dieses mit 

      Backpapier belegt hat.

-    Spalmare il tutto su una lamiera del forno, dopo averla foderata con carta di separazione per 

      cottura al forno.

–     Spread  out the  whole mixture onto a backing-try after having it covered with

      backing paper.

4.   Backzeit ungefähr 25-30 Minuten

  –   Den Backofen auf 250Grad vorheizen und auf 180 Grad reduzieren,

       wenn ihr die Masse in den  Ofen schiebt.

  -  Preriscaldare il forno a 25o gradi e al momento di infornare ridurre la temperatura a

     180 gradi. Tempo di cottura circa 25-30 minuti.

-   Preheat the ofen to 25o dregrees and the moment you put the backing-try

     with the mixture into it reduce the heat to 180 degrees. Cooking time: 25-30 minutes.  

5. Lasst  den Kuchen einige Minuten abkühlen und zerschneidet ihn dann in

     kleine Vierecke.

Lasciate raffreddare il  tutto per alcuni minuti e poi tagliate la torta in piccoli cubetti.

Let the cake cool down for some minutes and cut it then in small cubes.

The video below about the American monetary policy, which I discovered on “My Forex Space”, is according to me, quite interesting. We are informed about Ben Bernanke,

the actual Chairman of the Boards of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, his predecessor, Alain Greenspan or William Dudley who was a partner at the Goldman Sachs Bank

and is now  running the New York branch of the FED and about why is seems to be necessary to print 600 billion dollars with which to buy treasury bonds.

I wonder whether it  would really be advantageous for the Americans to let the printing presses humming indefinitely

and so destroy the standing of the dollar.

This highly interesting video informs us about the breathtaking steps

made by Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Steve Anthony Ballmer and others in order to make a dent in the Universe or to create a new consciousness as Steve Jobs says.

Computers are the big passion for this group of young people and, as we know, Bill Gates is now the richest man in the world.

As the video is quite long, I’ve tried to summarize it and you can maybe only watch it in parts, according to your interests.

At approx. 3.20 minutes

Steve Jobs is standing on a stage in Boston with Bill Gates (big brother) in his rear, where he says that the competition between him and Bill is over and that the world will become a better place. This speech seems weird. (This scene refers to the end of the story.)

Wie erreicht man diesen Ponte Romano im Centovalli, Tessin? Zuerst fahren Sie nach Intragna, oder gehen zu Fuss dorthin. Man muss das Dorf durchqueren und geradeaus in Richtung Re gehen. Beim Grotto du Ri gehen wir vorbei und wandern weiter bis zur Abzweigung nach rechts. Nach weiteren 5 Minuten geht es nach links . Man muss  über die Gleise der Centovallibahn gehen und  dann durch den Wald wandern. Es geht so hinunter zum Ponte Romano. Diese hübsche Brücke stammt aus dem Jahr 1578 und ist die älteste in der Region.

of the San Francisco Bay into the pacific Ocean. The bridge connects the city on the northern tipp of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County.

Before this bridge was built the only possible short route from San Francisco and what is now Marin County, was by boat. Ferry services began

as early as 1820. In the 1920s, engineer and bridge-builder Joseph Strauss became convinced that a bridge should be built across the Golden Gate.

The construction began in 1933 and it was completed in 1937. Strauss was a pioneer in building safety, making history with innovations, including hard

hat and daily sobriety tests. The Swiss engineer Ammann was a consultant in this project.

Unfortunately the bridge in not only the most popular place to commit suicide in the USA but also the most popular place in the entire world.

One can cross the bridge on foot or by bicycle. Just do it!

FISH EXTINCTION

You have certainly heard about the drammatic situtaion as far as the emptying of oceans is concerned. It’s alsmost unbelievable but once thriving populations of deep sea fish have been driven to the brink of extinction, because of the expanding fisheries.

Various species of sea fish are at such low levels that they qualifiy for the World Conservation Union’s  list. More and more associations, among them GREENPEACE or polititians ask urgently for  internationally protected reserves to place vast areas of the deep seas out of bounds to fisheries. The trawlers ( fishing nets that is dragged along the seabottom)especially should be checked and pirates arrested. Unfortunately, many, many fish end in their nets without being wanted and die without being eaten. They are called the by-catch fish. These  slow growing fish which reach a length of more than a metre long and live more than 6o years and some become sexually mature only after 30 years. So you can imagine how important it is not to eliminate this kind of fish. It seems that this by-catch fish have also become much smaller in the past 15 years.

Some  of  the endangered fish species which we shouldn’t eat are:

cod/ – North Sea/il ;merluzzo/der Kabeljau;

sharks/ in the North Atlantic/ i squali/die Haie;

Chinook salmon– Pacific Nothwest / il salmone/der Lachs;

steelhead trout/ la trota-California/ die Stahlkopf Forelle;

swordfish/il pesce spada/der Schwertfisch;

bluefin Tuna- Atlantic/il tonno da pinna blu/der Blauschwanztunfisch;

Metkong Giant Catfish/il pesce gatto/der Wels;

Russian Sturgeon/il storione/der Stör;

skate/razza/der Rochen; (on the above foto)

and last but not least don’t forget the little seahorse, which is also on this red list.

By the way, fish have fins to steer while travellling in the water, gills to breathe with, guts which you take out after having killed the fish, fishbones

you can’t eat, because they would choke you and eggs, of course.

Please stop eating shark-fin soup, because the flavour seems to come from the broth and not the fins! Each year up to 73 million sharks are killed for these fins

which are sliced into noodle-like strips and added mainly for texture!
