This novella (short novel) by Julian Barnes, which won the Booker Prize 2011, is a mystery of memory and missed opportunity.

Tony Webster,a cautious, divorced man in his 60s who “had wanted life not to bother me too much, and had succeeded,” receives

an unexpected bequest from Sarah, a woman  he’d met only once, 40 years earlier. The mother of his college girlfriend, Veronica,

has bequeathed him £500 — a legacy that unsettles Tony, pushing him to get in touch with Veronica (their relationship had

ended badly) and seek answers to certain unresolved questions such as

This book has been analyzed a lot and there are an indefinite number of opinions or questions such as the above mentioned

ones. because Julian Barnes never explains anything completely. I hope you will play the game I prepared for you with question

and answer cards that you can cut out and distribute on the table and try to match and that you will, after having read the

book, come to your own  and different conclusions.

NUN ZUM KaDeWe -KAUFHAUS DES WESTENS

Da wir uns momentan in unserern Deutschtstunden über Berlin und das Einkaufen unterhalten,

habe ich nach einem Video gesucht, das uns einen Einblick in das zweitgrösste Kaufhaus Europas,

das KaDeWe, gibt.

Ich fand dieses Video von Nico sehr lustig auch, wenn ich bei weitem nicht alles verstehe. Nico

möchte auf jeden Fall ein Experiment machen. In der 6. Etage des Kaufhauses gibt es eine Art

Luxussupermarkt und dort oben möchte Nico satt werden, ohne einen Cent zu bezahlen und dies

ungeachtet, ob er den Verkäufer/innen auf die Nerven geht. Seht selbst, ob Nico sein Ziel erreicht.

Ich habe auch ein Arbeitsblatt entwickelt und bitte euch, wie folgt vorzugehen.

The other day I’ve read Steve Jobs’ Commencement address which he delivered at the Standford University in 2005.

For those who should not know it, he was CEO and co-founder (together with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne) of Apple Computer and CEO of Pixar

Animation Studios but he had never graduated from college.

What he said impressed me and I, therefore, would like to quote some sentences and I also add the link to my grammar exercise (reported speech)

which you can correct online. Just click on your trackpad and a variety of sentences will appear and you have to look for the one in reported speech

The Mosquito Coast/Exercises

I’ve read the above mentioned book by Paul Theroux.  and then written the following  summary about it. You can listen to the text which I’ve divided into five parts.

In class we read excerpts of the book and watched the film.

The story which is narrated from the point of view of Charlie, Allie’s oldest son, and which has given me goose pimples, was published in 1981. It starts with father or Allie Fox

complaining about the  rottenness of America. Everything about that country seems to be awful. The Americans are said to just eat junk, sell junk or buy junk and it seems to

be full up of criminal millionaires and the moral sneaks  which seem to include the politicians and the schools. Last but not least there are all the savages who have come to America

to find paradise. While Allie is complaining in this way his is driving with his son Charlie in front of Tiny Polski’s mansion house. Mr Polski is his employer and is in the asparagus

business.

Da wir eine gute Portion Selbstmotivation brauchen, um eine neue Sprache zu lernen, möchte ich euch dazu einige Tipps  geben und empfehle auch das folgende

Also, ich kann mich motivieren, z.B./Allora, posso motivarmi, p.e. /So, I can motivate myyself, for example

-wenn ich ein Ziel habe. (Se ho un obbiettivo/if I have a goal)

- durch eine Prämie, oder Ansehen. (grazie a un compenso oppure  stima/thanks to a compensation or recognition)

- infolge Erniedrigung. (in consequenza ad un umiliazione/as a consequence of humiliation)

- wenn ich das Ziel eher als Frage und weniger als Tatsache sehe./ se vedo un obbietivo più come domanda che come fatto./if I see a goal more as a question than as a

   statement.)
