STEVE JOBS’ WISDOM

The other day I’ve read Steve Jobs’ Commencement address which he delivered at the Standford University in 2005.

For those who should not know it, he was CEO and co-founder (together with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne) of Apple Computer and CEO of Pixar

Animation Studios but he had never graduated from college.

Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address, posted with vodpod

What he said impressed me and I, therefore, would like to quote some sentences and I also add the link to my grammar exercise (reported speech)

which you can correct online. Just click on your trackpad and a variety of sentences will appear and you have to look for the one in reported speech

that goes together with the one in direct speech.

http://langedi49.ch/REPORTEDSPEECH.htm

I’ve also prepared cards where the question words have to be filled in by the learner. The cards can also be cut out and students  may discuss the questions

in small groups by also deciding about the question words to use and the answers to give. STEVEJOBSQUESTIONS2

- „You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.“. (Referred to life)

Traduzione in italiano:

BIO-CREVETTEN/ORGANIC SHRIMPS/VIETNAM1

For English listening and vocabulary explanations scroll down.

braucht, wenn man BIO-Crevetten züchten will.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES/YOUR CAREERS/MY BLOG!

A penfriend of mine who eaches at the Ural State Pedagogical University, Institute of Foreign Languages in Yekaterinenburg, Russia

http://www.u.arizona.edu/~geissler/Ural State Pedagogical University.htm

has asked me to write her a paper for their conference they are holding about the importance of the knowledge of foreign languages in our careers and about the means by which

professional language skills can be obtained through self-study and in what way I integrate the material I publish on my blog into my lessons.

It would also be intersting for me to hear your, the readers, opinion on this topic!

Here below is the part of the report  where I write about the importance  of  language knowledge  for us here in Switzerland because on my blog you can find enough

ideas of how to achieve the goal by self-learning.

2.Why is the knowledge of a foreign language important for your/our career?:

In Switzerland we have 4 national languages or  more precisely German, French, Italian and Romantsch.

Beyond that approx.25% of the inhabitants are foreigners in our country .This shows very quickly how important languages are in order to communicate with one another and,

of course, to understand the cultures of the others better.

To acquire language knowledge belongs to our everyday life. People who work for banks or at international companies, in general, or for  travel agencies wouldn’t have any chances

to get a job without this knowledge. The languages represent our „natural resources“ which we do not possess.

In our globalized world languages have become more and more important. Only through communication and comprehension of the other can  we improve the world or at least avoid many misunderstandings. Imagine also that you go on a trip to a foreign country and what use this is if you can’t even speak to the people there!

I teach English and German at an international company and for some of the employees the knowledge of these languages is a must.

Besides this, I teach the above mentioned languages to people who work for the security services and for them too, the languages are essential in their jobs because of the many contacts they

have with tourists or partners.

On this video I’m explaining why I set up a blog and why I think it is useful for adult learner/students, also for those who study on their own because I give answers to questions or explain or

translate vocabulary.

Here the video you aksed me to prepare; I’m, of course, not a movie star, but I hope it will give some hints of why I do this work here!

CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch/map/interactiv

The following article is in English with vocabulary explanation in English, German and Italian.

I know that you’ve all heard about the terrible earthquake by which Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island New Zealand, was struck (explanations of how to use this

word see below) on 22 February  2011 and that due to this catastrophe many people died and  many buildings were destroyed. Some parts of the city still seem to be without

drinking water or electricity.

Christchurch is a very nice city and has approximately 350’000 inhabitants. There are beautiful parks and excellent schools and the cosy tramway usually takes you on a

sightseeing tour around the city.

Unfortunately, the very famous ChristChurch Cathedral, which was built in the 19th century and  finished in 1904 has been very badly damaged. Its spire which reached 63 metres

above Cathedral Square  is in ruins and left only the lower tower standing.  The many buildings nearby are also ruined. The cathedral is in the centre of the city and is surrounded by

Cathedral Square. The tower had offered a good view over the centre. The cathedral also had a very impressive organ. I only hope that it still exists.

Last but not least the cathedral used to be the best known and most visited building in New Zealand!

What’s the name of the capital city of New Zealand?

I’m sorry for all this and  wish youl  good luck!

EGYPT/ÄGYPTEN/TUTANKHAMUN

DEUTSCH: SIEHE UNTEN

Artikel mit Wortschatzerklärung  auf Englisch und Italienisch und Grammatik/Passiv/Nebensätze: Ab A2-B1

First of all, let’s hope that we can soon return to this fascinating country!

All around the world many people are worried about the situation in Egypt and very sorry also for the pillages that have lately occurred  at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquity in Cairo.

That museum can be compared with the Louvre in Paris and it contains many very important pieces of ancient Egyptian history.

It houses, for example, the world’s largest collection of  Pharaohnic antiquities and the many treasures of the Pharaoh TUTANKHAMUN of the 18th dynasty. The current museum is

in Tahrir Square where many actual protests are taking place.

It was Howard Carter an English  archeologist who is known as the primary discoverer of  Tutankhamun’s tomb on 4 November 1922. Carter’s water carrier seems to have found

the steps leading to the tomb. It was by far the best preserved and most intact pharaohnic tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings.

When Carter  and his companions arrived they made a „tiny breach in the top left hand corner“ of the door and by means of

a candle they could see that the gold and ebony treasures were still in order. Inside the tomb there was a large collection of artefacts, which should accompany the pharaoh to the

hereafter. There were weapons, ivory, alabaster and gold bracelets, necklaces or other decorative jewellery. They found the famous chest with the green gem in form of a scarab

and with the eye of Horus in the middle and above all the  famous GOLD MASK in the burial chamber. In that room there were murals all over. Carter had never seen anything

so magificent like that.

When Tutankhamun came to power he married his half sister and they had two daughter, both stillborn. During his reign he lifted the ban of Amun (God) and traditional privileges

were restored and the capital was brought back to Thebes.

Scientists still do not agree on Tutankhamun’s reason of death. Did he die at the age  of nineteen because he was suffering from malaria or maybe  because there used to be incest

or was he poisoned? However, the latest scans show that he had many broken bones  and that one leg got infected. Scientists suppose that he may have fallen from his wagon due to a fight.

Click on this link and you can, for example

-read the article

-and then listen to it and at the same time do a drag and drop exercise TUTANKHAMUN

I would like to end this comment in English with a little bit of grammar:

KAIRO

more about “The egyptian pyramids“, posted with vodpod

If you click onto the following link there appears a window into which you can paste a text. You can use the one I added here below or one you choose. Afterwards you choose the language in which you want to do the exercise and the grammar problem you want to train, such as verbs, nouns, prepositions etc. If you choose a drag & drop excercise the words which you will have to drag or transport into the gaps  show after having clicked on submit.

Text in English which you can insert into the window, if you want.

THE ELEFANT MAN

He is called „The Elefant Man“ because he is so deformed  and very different from normal people, or very elefantlike. He is ownded and abused for freakshows by a man who makes money by showing him to visitors. One day Dr Treves, who works at the nearby hospital, sees his picture displayed and in window.  At first he is interested in him and would also like to take advantages of the handicapped, but then he feels disgusted and wants to see him. The dirty man in the shop, of course, wants some money before he lets Dr Treves see he creature behind the cloth.

The doctor decides to help him. He succeeds in taking the creature or Mr. Merrick to the hospital. There he is looked after, fed well and can read and write. He even  entertains well-to-dos of society.

HATSHEPSUT

Hatshepsut was an Egyptian Queen and Pharaoh. She accomplished many things, but perhaps the greatest of all was her ability to rule Egypt during the 8th Dynasty. More than a military commander she was a benefactress of the arts. Until that time it had been extremely rare for a woman to sit on the throne of Egypt and unheard of for a woman to boldy assume the role of a pharaoh. From the valley of the Kings we crosed the mountain on foot and arrived in that way at her temple or Deir el-Bahari in the valley consecrated to the goddess Hathor. Some years ago many people, among them Swiss tourists, were killed  there by terrorists.

Unscramble the various paragraphs in a way that  they make sense.

1)This was a bold move for the female ruler. It was at this time that Hatshepsut began to take mesures to insure the people of Egypt saw her as the  legitimate  ruler of the Egyptian nation. According to their custom, the ruling pharaoh was required to be considered as divine.

2)She therefore made efforts to curry favour with them and succeeded admirably. Finally, Hatshepsut disposed of traditional female clothing and donned the garb of traditional male pharaohs.

3)In 1473 B.C.Hatshepsut decided she had had enough of ruling on behalf of the child and declared herself pharaoh.

4)This, of course, meant that he married his half sister, Hatshepsut. It is believed that the new king did not live long and upon his death his son, by another wife, became paharaoh. The child was too young to rule a country like Egypt, so his aunt and stepmother took over on his behalf , as regent and ruled for six years.

5)Reliefs and artwork depicting the female pharaoh indicate that she wore a fake beard similar to the ones worn by previous male sitting on the throne of Egypt. The art portraying the queen also seems to indicate that among the accomplishments of Queen Hatshepsut was the respect of the Egyptia people.

6)Hatshepsut struck upon the brilliant plan of claiming her mother was visited by the deity Amon-Ra who called upon her while pregnant with Hatshepsut. His would seem to indicate that the Queen was divine because of the visit. Hatshepsut was also astute enough to realize that her stronghold on the throne of Egypt was only as strong as the priests’ support of her.

7)A timeline of Queen Hatshepsut’s live indicates she was born the daughter of King Thutmose I and one of his queens.

8)When the king died the throne was inherited by his son, In keeping up with traditional Egyptian standards, the new king married his father’s oldest daughter.
