Electricity/Bavona Valley

Valle Bavona: stone houses and almost no electr…, posted with vodpod

When I saw the above video by Swissinfo.ch  I decided to publish it also here on my blog, because I know many ticinesi fishermen who are angry, disappointed, sad or just despair as there are almost no fish left in the region’s rivers due to the electricity production.

Here below there is a summary of the video’s content and an exercise  you can check online.

All around the Maggia valley in the Italian speaking Ticino you can see high waterfalls.

which tumble down steep cliff. Many mountain streams feed the Maggia river. The water is exploited  to produce electricity. In the 50s and 60s a network of hydroelectric

power plants was built there. In that period the Bavona valley decided against electricitybecause the inhabitants thought that it was a luxury they could do without.

That decision now proves to be a bonus. Due to the fact that if you want electricity you have to produce it by yourself (solar panels or generators) few people built

houses and the valley remained almost untouched and is practically only  inhabited in summer.

The Bavona valley is one of the steepest mountain valleys with rockfalls, landslides and avalanches.

We learn from one of the speakers that in the past the region around Locarno has been as swamp and that therefore people moved higher up. A family who had an

alpine pasture was considered lucky, however tiny it was, because they could make cheese.

The first colonizers of the alps were heroes. To escape poverty the majority of men emigrated in the 19th century, leaving behind the elderly, children and the women.

These women had to take care of the cattle and fields, while raising a family in the harshest environment. To pay homage to these strong and hardworking women a local artist made a sculpture resembling the madonna, but instead of carrying a baby she is holding a tool. The priest blessed the fugure  as a woman from Galilee and the inhabitants accepted her.

The artist Franco Laffranca draws a lot from the local traditions, but also tries to bring modern culture to the rather remote  and isolated valley and he wants to work together with other artists under the condition that they consider their work more important than that of the farmers who made life there possible.

Wordtranslations:

the water is tumbling down/ l’acqua scende in modo forte/in another sense to tumble down can also have the meaning of getting ruined/andare in rovina

rockfalls/caduta sassi e landslides/frane

to do without/fare a meno di

machen: fare/ = gemacht/fatto

müssen: dovere (Modalverb)= gemusst/dovuto

verdingt werden: dare in servizio/= verdingt worden =dato in servizio

bekommen=ricevere/=bekommen/ ricevuto

steigen=salire/ = gestiegen/salito

essen=mangiare/= gegessen/mangiato

denken=pensare/=gedacht/pensato

versprechen/promettere/= versprochen/promesso

erleiden: soffrire= erlitten/sofferto

auf etwas zurückgehen: risale a qc./=zurückgegangen/risalito

auf etwas eingehen: trattare qc./= auf etwas eingegangen/trattato qc.

Jeff Beck/ Rhonda Smith

Great musicians in Locarno!

Just listen to the music and read the article if you like.

Jeff Beck, posted with vodpod
The other day I saw Jeff Beck and Rhonda Smith, two powerful muscicians, in a concert in Locarno and was fascinated by them. They were the opening group of ZZ Top and I had never heard of them before and, therefore, wrongly thought that they were less good than the main stars, but I liked them even better.
In the meantime I’ve tried to find out more about Jeff  and Rhonda and saw that in the sixties, when he was hardly twenty, he even substituted Eric Clapton in the famous band “Yardbirds”. Jeff Beck seems to be one of the best guitarists worldwide. He is English or more precisely from Surrey and 66 years old.

Much of Beck’s recorded output has been instrumental, with a focus on innovative sounds and his releases have spanned Genres ranging from  blues-rock, heavy metal, jazz fusion and most recently, an additional blend of guitar-rock and electronica. Beck has earned wide critical praise; furthermore, he has received the the Grammy Award for the best Instrumental Performance five times. Although he has had two hit albums (in 1975 and 1976) as a solo act, Beck has not been able to establish and maintain a broad following or the sustained Commerce of many of his collaborators and bandmates.

About Jeff’s temperament

Stories about Beck’s temper began to circulate early on in his career. His perfection, coupled with the faulty equipment often in use during the 1960s, led to many stories about his willingness to take out frustrations on his equipment] The 1966 movie BLOWUP contains a scene where the Yardbirds perform “Stroll On” and Beck becomes so enraged by equipment problems that he smashes his guitar.

About Rhonda

She also is a very gifted musician and not only plays the bass in a technically brilliant way, but her voice provoked goose pimples in me. Rhonda is also a songwriter and worked with the legendary PRINCE. She plays the bass because of her brother who brought the instrument home when she was a girl and told her not to touch it. Rhonda was born in Halivax, Nova Scotia, the oldest black community in Canada. She plays blues-rock, jazz/funk and electrified funk and I don’t now what else!

Vocabulary explanations in German and Italian

1. wrongly(adv.) = erroneamente= fälschlicherweise (Adjektiv=wrong=erroneo=falsch)

2. worldwide= in tutto il mondo = weltweit

3. output = la produzione =  die Produktion

4. recently= ultimamente= unlängst

5. although= benche- obwohl (congiunzione/Konjunktion)

6. bandmates = colleghi di gruppo =  Bandkollegen

7. willingness= la volontà =  der Wille

8. goose pimples=la  pelle d’oca=die  Gänsehaut

BOSCO GURIN/TESSIN
