DOLCE FAR NIENTE/D/I/E

On our trip in China we have seen how the Chinese people relax!

On the 9th July 2014 I’ve read in the NZZ that American students don’t like it when they should just think or meditate. It seems that many participants of a test prefered to give themselves an electric shock. An experiment with NZZ readers has, however, shown that they enjoyed sweet idleness but it has  also to be admitted that only people attracted by the topic participated here.

Just sit quietly, have your feet massaged by the fish and meditate! Solamente stare seduti,  lasciare i vostri piedi massaggiati dai pesci! e meditare!

Ok, summer has arrived and people seem to be looking forward to sweet idleness, but do we really succeed in shutting down, for example, in not reading any books, in not writing short messages, e-mails or, above all, in not blogging!

Sweet laziness where one would not expect it!

Sweet laziness where one would not expect it!

As daydreaming or creative thinking can really also be very fulfilling, American researchers wanted to know how people can amuse themselves with their own thoughts. They, therefore, asked 146 students to just follow their thoughts for 6-15 minutes while staying in a room with few furnishings. The result was that on a scale of 1-9 approx. half of the subjects considered the experience as little satisfactory. 56% of the participants found that it had been difficult to concentrate. 89% said that their thoughts had wandered around a lot. Even at home or in people’s usual surroundings, another 44 subjects said that they did not like the experiment. 30% admitted that they had listened to music or played with their mobile phone during the test.

The researchers asked themselves, whether people who were not students would enjoy the sweet idleness more and recruted, therefore, just citizens who also carried out the test partly in their homes but didn’t enjoy this experience either and more than half of the guinea pigs admitted that they had cheated!

I wish you all a very good summer with many exciting thoughts!

The researchers were most shocked by an experiment in which the students could choose between not doing anything for 15 minutes and to give themselves a light electric shock. 67% of the men and 25% of the women couldn’t withstand the electric shock. One man has given himself 190 hits and was consequently excluded from the evaluation.

I would like to know from you what you think about sweet idleness and whether you can manage for once without a book, mobile and so on. It’s worthwhile to try and I can only recommend it !

  1. I read the same study! We live in a time of headlines, quick talk, texts and fast foods. Our school curriculum is based on passing tests rather than relishing the time for learning. We are measured by questionable benchmarks that suggest that success is measured by wealth, position, etc. I’m not surprised by the results of this study. Having said, that however, I have a feeling that we are in a transition into new ways of thinking. We are being bombarded by inexpensive and readily available stimuli. We live in interesting times. A great post. Thank you!!!

    • Good morning Rebecca and I have very much enjoyed your clear and very well expressed thoughts with which I completely agree.
As far as the school system is concerned I’ve also read that in Europe “competence”(ability to do something by training and usefulness for the economy) seems to become more and more important and thinking and understanding a problem is losing importance!
We definitely live in highly interesting times; I new revolution is approaching!
I wish you a great day, maybe with Maya Angelou!
      From Ticino with best regards

  2. Liebe Martina,
