At twenty-six Cheryl Strayed seemed to be at the end of her live, her mother and most important person, who looms over the book like a ghost, has died within a short time of lung cancer, her marriage with Paul comes to an end due to her many infidelities and her experience with heroine is another sign that she has to change if she wants to save herself. After having taken the decision to abort the child she has been expecting and to walk the Pacific Crest Trail/PCF on her own, Cheryl starts to get prepared for this big and crazy trip. On the whole Cheryl hikes 1.100 miles in three months, crosses 9 mountain ranges in extremely difficult climatic situations, which change from very cold to scorching heat. She also has very little money at disposal, or is extremely thirsty, meets rattlesnakes on the barren land, is very much in pain because of her big problems with her toes and blisters and above all, she has to come to grips with her great emotional pains.
Cheryl also speaks about the self made house they lived in when she was a child or her father and how he treated them as well as about her stepfather.
On the first day of her hike she comes to a rare level spot near the gathering of Joshua trees, yuccas, and junipers and stops to rest. There she is finally able to take her backpack off, which she calls MONSTER, because it is almost half as heavy as herself, by sitting on one of the big boulders.
Chery Strayed writes about the many books she reads during her trip and about her favorite writers, such as Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor or Michener. Touching are also the many stories concerning the people she meets on this very special trip and with whom she camped together and shared her experiences.
Cheryl Strayed tells us how she manages to return to sanity and feel save in this world. The more I immersed into this story and the hardships Cheryl had to bear the better I liked it!
PS
We recently went to Lanzo d’Intelvi, a place across the borders of Switzerland, in Italy, or more precisely opposite of Lugano and hiked up to the Mountain Sighignola, where we enjoyed the silence, songs of the birds and this magnificent view, despite the fact that the weather was not too good and felt completely happy after having reached this view point! What a great goal Cheryl has reached!

What an inspiration it is to read about Chery Strayed, not the least because I would love to do the Pacific Crest Trail one day. I haven’t watched the movie, but think I’d rather read her book. Lanzo d’Intelvi looks like a beautiful place, too. 🙂

You are the very first person,Otto, I know, who would like to really do this trail. I am convined that you are more used to physical hardship than Cheryl at the beginning of her great undertaking. I thank you very much for your very interesting comment and good luck with whatever you do🌎 Ps It’s no far from Lanzo d’intelvi to Monte Sighignola.
