I AM PILGRIM/DER TOD HAT KEIN GESICHT/E/D/I

IN USBEKISTAN, NEAR THE BORDER TO AFGANISTAN/IN DER NAEHE DER AFGHANISCHEN GRENZE/IN USBEKISTAN, VICINO AL CONFINE CON AFGANISTAN

HAGIA SOFIA IN ISTANBUL HAS BEEN TURNED INTO I MOSQUE BY THE TURKISH PRESIDENT Recep Tayyip Erdoğan/https://rivella49.wordpress.com/2013/11/04/venedig-krimvenice-crimea/

This thriller by Terry Hayes, a former journalist and screenwriter, who lives now in Switzerland, after having emigrated from Sussex to Australia when he was a child and at twenty one he was appointed North American correspondent, is unputdownable and informs the reader about highly interesting and questionable things in various countries and cultures, in which the characters of this crazy “cats and mouse game” are located.

On the one hand we have US-American orphan, who is brough up by a very rich couple, but the boy, unfortunately, doesn’t seem to meet the expectations on him. He studies medicine at Harvard university and later kills, on behalf of the US-Secret Service, a Russian agent, who passes along secrets.

This genius, or CIA ghost also speaks about the failures of the US- secret services, which led to the terror attacks of 9/11 and writes a book about forensic pathologies, all this under the wrong name Jude Garrett and lives in Paris! His real name is in fact Scott Murdoch and it is thanks to the ambitious Ben Bradley, the criminal lieutenant, responsible for murder in N.Y, who discovers the real identity of him. Bradley tries to convince Murdoch or Pilgrim to put his knowledge at disposal of the war against terrorism.

The novel starts in fact with a murder of a lady in N.Y, which Ben Bradly has to solve and he realizes that the murderer has used exactly the same technic as Jude Garrett describes in his novel.

On the other side we have a second genius, called Saracen, who has to watch in Saudi Arabia how his father is openly executed, when he was still a child, because of offending the king’s family. As a consequence his mother, who is ostracized, has to leave the country with his son and daughters and go to Bahrein, where she is westernized, according to her Saracen. Influenced by all this, Saracen is driven towards the Moslem Brothers. He gets away from his family and goes to Afghanistan in order to fight the war against the Russian occupants as a Mujahidin. Thanks to his acts of bravery he gets the respect of a warlord, who becomes very powerful after the victory over the Russians. The Saracen is provided with the necessary papers to enter the Lebanon and has the possibility to study medicine in Beirut.

Finally he also finds his big love and marries the woman from Palestine with whom he has a boy, unfortunately with the Down syndrome. She is, however, very tragically killed in Gaza during a humanitarian action by an Israeli missile . While she is dying, Saracen promises her to look after the child. He also makes up his mind to destroy the United States. He succeeds in a highly sophisticated way to enter e Syrian laboratory, steal the variola major virus and to modify it so that he is finally ready to carry out his attack.

He returns to Afghanistan, where he takes three western hostages to a very remote place in order to test his bioweapon. He then tries to get rid of his guinea pigs, but, unfortunately, is found out by the Australiens, but succeeds in escaping. They discover, however the virus and the corpses are handed over to the Americans.

The Saracen manages to arrive in Germany and store the virus in vaccination vials, ready for the transportation to the USA, where the patients should be inoculated by the doctors.

Pilgrim, Scott Murdoch or Peter Campell is now investigating another murder in Turkey, where finds out that the unpolite policewoman is the Saracen’s sister! Pilgrim also meets him, who does not understand the worldwide tragedy, which he may provoke!

Unfortunately, I havn’t got a picture from Geneva and the Banks, despite the fact that in the book they are also mentioned!

NEW YORK
